Before the Heart Hardens Facilitator’s Guide

The Before The Heart Hardens Facilitator’s Guide is the companion curriculum for professionals leading young people through the Before The Heart Hardens journal. Designed for school social workers, counselors, teachers, paraprofessionals, and community-based group leaders, the guide provides the structure and tools needed to facilitate a 39-week trauma-informed journey of emotional healing and self-discovery for boys and young men.

The curriculum is organized into four progressive parts and includes 273 adaptable sessions. Each week provides a theme overview, learning objectives, materials, trigger warnings, facilitator guidance, and detailed daily session plans. Sessions incorporate grounding activities, guided journaling, group discussion, hands-on activities, affirmations, breathing exercises, and closing rituals.

Built on the philosophy that behavior is communication, the guide helps facilitators look beyond anger, withdrawal, silence, and other behaviors to better understand the emotional experiences underneath them. It emphasizes safety, trust, choice, peer connection, cultural responsiveness, strengths-based engagement, and emotionally supportive group environments.
